Carrier Oils- Benefits, Properties, How to use them, and What to use them for

Oils have been used around the world for centuries! Yet, there are so many different types that it can tend to get a bit confusing as to what to use them for. I decided to start off with a guide to Base oils or so called Carrier oils and what they can be used for. I wanted to also provide a list for those looking for more in depth descriptions and a chart for a more simplified quick reference. I know there are so many books out there for that purpose but it felt like no single book really explained everything about a specific oil. So, I spent a month to researching books and information on carrier oils and get as much facts about them as I could.There was surprisingly a pretty hefty list of base oils so I picked 33 of the most popular or commonly used oils to talk about.

What Are Carrier Oils/Base Oils?

Carrier oils are generally oils made from vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. They often go by Carrier Oils, Base Oils, Vegetable Oils, or Fixed Oils. These base oils are filled with essential fatty acids which is why they are so beneficial and the uses are endless. Most of these oils can be used in cooking, cleaning, skincare, hair care, massage, aromatherapy, cosmetics, homemade beauty and cleaning products, healing and medicinal purposes and practically anything else you can think of. Carrier oils are also often used to dilute essential oils since essential oils are extremely concentrated and can be harmful if they are used undiluted or improperly. Choosing a Carrier oils is just as important as choosing essential oils because each oil has its own unique properties and can be used for many different things.


What to look for when purchasing Oils

The Quality of your oils are really important and its also important to understand the terms used for processing an oil so you can purchase the best quality.

Cold Pressed: Most Natural State of an oil, Pressed through a machine that reaches no more than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Highest Quality and Filled with Nutrients. In order to find the best cold pressed oils contact the oil manufacturer and ask them if their oils are considered Raw. If they truly are raw oils they won’t be heated more than 110 degrees Fahrenheit. The Raw Cold Pressed Oils are the best.

Expeller Pressed: Really similar to Cold Pressing but expeller pressed oils are pressed in slightly higher temperatures between 120 degrees to 200 degrees. The heat comes from the friction of the machine and oftentimes the natural qualities of the oil can become compromised and the oil isn’t as full of nutrients.

Solvent Extracted: Uses a solvent such as hexane to extract oils. Hexane is a possible carcinogen and the solvent used to extract the oil is often found in the oil after processing. Nutrients and Fatty Acids are destroyed. If the oil you are purchasing doesn’t have a label showing that it was Cold Pressed or Expeller Pressed in most cases it was solvent extracted (this goes for organic too).


Unrefined: After the oil is pressed a screen is used to filter and remove dust or small particles from the oil without compromising its nutrients, vitamins and fatty acids. The best high quality oils are unrefined.

Refining or part refining (including “fractionated” oils): These oils are completely different from the natural state of a cold pressed unrefined oil and most of the nutrients have been destroyed.  The process is made to preserve the oil for a long shelf life. Colors and odors are removed using high heat, freezing, bleaching, and deodorization which completely damages important nutrients, vitamins, and fatty acids. If you have a choice between part refined or refined, choose part refined but try to purchase unrefined oils when available.


Extra Virgin, Virgin, and regular (mainly applies to olive oil)- Extra Virgin Oil would mean it has only been pressed 1 time. Some companies press the olives multiple times to obtain more oil and this makes the oil quality less pure.  Virgin would mean pressed more than once etc..  


So the best oils you can find would be a Cold Pressed (Raw) Organic Unrefined Extra Virgin oil…lol as if how the oils are pressed isn’t confusing enough. Hopefully this puts an end to all of our confusion!

Also, make sure you Avoid Mineral Oils: many people opt for using “mineral oils” for many different things but mineral oils should be avoided since they are petroleum based. I personally avoid any petroleum based products including Vaseline.

    Hi I am confused by the so many plant oils out there and whats best to use… I have been told argan, sea buckthorn, tamanu, rose hip, and on and on…so here are my questions for using on the face

    1. Which of all the oils is the deeepest penerating and is non pore clogging

    2. which is the highest in vitamins and anti oxidants

    3. which has skin firming and toning properties

    4. Is it better to use the oils on their own or in a blend

      Hi Lorne, thank you for the comment! There are many different oils out there so it can get confusing. There are even oils that I did not add to my list because I was not able to find much information on them. Before I answer your questions, keep in mind that results may be different for you for certain oils than others. For some people some oils absorb better into their skin than others and those same oils can absorb differently for others. It really depends on your skin. Sometimes it may take some experimenting to find what works best for you.
      1. As far as deepest penetrating, and non pore clogging oils…I would say Apricot Kernel, Avocado oil, Borage Seed Oil, Camellia Oil, Hazelnut oil, and Grapeseed oil are very penetrating oils The oils that generally don’t clog your pores as much as others are Almond oil, Apricot Kernel, Avocado, Coconut oil, Grapeseed, Olive oil, and Sunflower oil.

      2. Vitamins and Anti Oxidants- Almond oil, Avocado Oil, Coconut oil, Hemp Seed Oil (keep in mind that different oils can contain different vitamins and minerals that others don’t.) As far as anti-oxidants it’s important to buy unrefined oils those will be higher in antioxidants

      3. I have heard that Hazelnut Oil is good for toning, Jojoba is also great for firming skin over time but may clog pores. Although many of the other oils I mentioned above will also help

      4. If your trying to use only 1 oil for your face I would recommend Almond oil, Avocado, Coconut, or Grapeseed, or Rosehip but I personally like to blend my oils. I don’t go too crazy with the blending but 2-3 oils in a blend makes a good combo.

    I have tried so many oils on my face and have had no success. I’m in my mid 30’s and have suffered from acne for the better part of the past 10 years. I get breakouts mostly before “that time of the month” so I have concluded that I have hormonal acne. On the other hand, I also have dry skin…so finding a balance has been a challenge. (I also have to deal with acne scars, and fine lines/wrinkles.) Over the past 4 months I have tried many different combinations of the following: jojoba oil, grapeseed, sweet almond, apricot kernel, avocado, rosehip, and lately macadamia oil. (I have added a few drops of Lavender essential oil to some of these potions that I have created as well.) The grapeseed oil really dried out my skin and Rosehip seems to really break me out, even if it’s a small amount. (Could it be an allergy maybe? Any product with rosehip in it seems to cause some sort of reaction of small red bumps, clogged pores.) So finally I tried Macadamia oil. It sounded like it would be the safest option… The first week was GLORIOUS! Firstly, it smells amazing and secondly it made my skin sooooo soft and smooth. But then, I started getting small bumps all over my chin, whiteheads and generally clogged pores. I was SO disappointed! Does anyone have suggestions on anything else to try? I’m feeling so defeated by this whole process… 🙁

      Shelaine, I’m sorry to hear that. Sometimes It can be hard to find exactly what works for your skin. Our bodies all react differently to different oils and essential oils so unfortunately it can take a lot of trial and error. Sometimes even the natural oils may not help much with skin problems if it has to do with something internal causing the acne and dry skin. I would maybe recommend finding a naturopathic doctor who can take a look at your skin, and go over any problems you are having. They would be able to best determine what you can do to help eliminate any skin problems and if it is hormonal, they can help you find a way to balance out your hormones. Hope that helps!       Hello. Just saw this post and liked the info. I make bath and body products and it am no expert, however I’d like to put in my 2 cents worth.
      The reader complained about the oils clogging her pores etc. It could be possible it will help to make a lotion, an emolotion of water and oils. I’ve found that this can be more beneficial to the skin, absorption inot the sub dermal layers is better and helps to tetanus the moisture in the skin. Since it is mixed with water, aloe juice etc, it helps the body absorb more quickly and efficiently. Thanks

      per the above listing, Rosehip and Grapeseed are not to be used for acne.. That may be why you had negative effects with those.

      Also, Are you taking hot showers? Hot showers open you skins pores- if you do not rinse in cold water(to close the pores) first then apply oils after shower= they would get into your pores. Always finish with COLD water in your shower/Bath to close your freshly washed pores.Always drink 1/2 your weight in water a day and stay away from fried foods. Try the Watermelon or Chia seed oil.

    Hi, thank you so much for this information. However, may I still ask you a question please? I want t.o make a paste/ balm to use on my temples and other pressure points for an anxiety blend. Which carrier oil would be best to use? Thank you again

      you could use a simple base of 1 part coconut oil and 1 part bees wax. It will make a balm and you can add your essential oils to that. Just melt both the coconut oil and beeswax and then add in your essential oils, allow it to cool and that’s it.

    Hi Nessa, I’m blending 4 carrier oils together, if I heat them in a glass container placed in hot water, for the oils to blend well together and to be lighter and not so thick, by how many months will i shorten the shelf life?

      Hi Lu-Ann,

      Thanks for the comment. That’s a tough question since there are so many variables. The temperature of the heat, the type of oils used would all lead to different results. I would recommend keeping the heat as low as possible but I don’t see it shortening the shelf life too much either way. Don’t take my word for this because again it can depend on the oils etc. but I would say any recipes would last up to a year max. Hope that helps. Thanks again.

    This article has been very helpful to me . It’s very shameful on my part that I use to think if an oil is organic then it won’t have any chemicals in it . I read this article twice but I still have a doubt and I shall be grateful if you could help me with it .
    You have mentioned in your article that if the oil we purchase hasn’t been labelled with either one of the extaction method i.e cold pressed or expeller pressed , then it must have been treated chemically . I’d like to know if the oil that we purchase has a label of cold pressed on it but doesn’t have a label of hexane free ( which is mostly present in the one which is not chemically tarted ) , will it mean it is treated chemically.
    Also , if the label says that it is unrefined and cold pressed then will it mean it is not solvent treated?

      It all depends on what essential oil you are using. Each oil should be diluted differently. There is a website called Using Essential Oils safely and they have really good recommendations on how to dilute essential oils with carrier oils properly. Hope that helps.

    I have a question I’m wanting to use some carrier oils on my scalp for hair growth etc but my hair is colored. Are carrier oils safe to use or will they remove the color from my hair?? Thanks

      That would honestly be a question for your hair stylist. Depending on the type of product(s) they are using could vary and the oils may strip away some of the color so I would ask.

      oils make hair feel softer, and easy to manage dry hair, but do not contribute to hair growth. For hair growth you need to increase protein consumption and vitamin D, hair, nails and vision require a healthy diet and a good amount of protein and vitamin d. Try it for a few months and will notice a difference. Drink milk, eat sardines, and also don’t forget leafy vegetables. Its body care from the inside out….pls provide feed back if and when you try this…I know it works wonders for my nail and hair.

    I wondered if you could answer a question regarding blending carrier oils. Can you have too many in one remedy? ie. if i wanted to get the benefits from various carrier oils in one skin product lets say 6 or 7. Would it be more beneficial to get the right mix of all of them in one or to make 2 separate remedies to use at different times? is there a limit to how many good properties the skin / hair can absorb in one go? Would you get more from a larger quantity individually?

If you wanted to get the benefits from multiple oils lets say 6 or 7, is it better to get the right mix of all of them in one remedy (meaning the amount of some would be very little ie. the thicker ones), or to make different ones to use at different times? Is there a limit to the different good qualities the skin / hair can absorb in one go or would it be more beneficial to have a larger quantity of less oils?

      Sometimes less is more, but if you take a look at a lot of natural beauty products on the market, they do seem to mix a lot of different oils together. I personally think it could help, you just need to be willing to experiment. Good luck!

    Thanks so much for publishing this. You do not list the viscosity of hazelnut oil. I am interested in replacing my hair conditioner with a carrier oil with essential oils added — perhaps lavender, spikenard, rosemary . . . . But I have light colored hair and want to avoid a carrier that is dark. Any thoughts on that?

      It’s been a while since I’ve used hazelnut oil and from what I remember it is a thinner oil and dark as well. If you have lighter hair you may be better off using something else. Hope that helps. Good luck!
